Solo Debut Guitar Competition: Guidelines and Application


The Denver Classical Guitar Society is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its Second Solo Debut Guitar Competition.

Competition Rounds:

The competition will consist of three rounds:

  • Pre-selection by unedited video
  • Public semi-final with a maximum of eight pre- selected contestants
  • A public final round with four finalists

Repertoire:

For the unedited video round:

  • Joaquin Turina’s Fandanguilllo Op. 36 (Ed. Schott)
  • A free-choice piece of contrasting style

For the semi-final round:

  • The two pieces of the video round
  • Two free-choice works of contrasting styles and periods
  • Total program duration: maximum of 20 minutes

For the final round:

  • A free-choice program of no less than 15 not more than 20 minutes duration. None of the works performed in the previous rounds may be included.

Location and Date of Semi-Final and Final Rounds:

Both rounds will take place on March 14, 2009 on the Colorado School of Mines campus at the Liberal Arts, International Studies, and Music Building, 19th Street and 6th Avenue, Golden, Colorado starting at 1 PM. Admission is free and open to the general public.

Eligibility for the Candidates:

  • Be 35 years old or younger by the date of the competition (March 14, 2009)
  • Open to Colorado guitarists

    • Colorado born, or
    • Studying in a Colorado institution, or
    • Colorado resident
  • Participants should not have performed as featured artists in the DCGS concert series, nor be performers with established concert careers.

Materials to Submit:

Copy of one or more of the following, as needed to prove: 1. Age eligibility, and 2. Being a Colorado guitarist, as defined on the previous page

  • Driver’s license, birth certificate, passport or student ID
  • High quality, unedited, video tape or DVD with the two pieces described on the previous page
  • Brief resume
  • Completed application (see link below)
  • Application fee of $25, payable by check or money order to DCGS

Awards:

First Prize: $500 and debut recital during the DCGS 2009-2010 season.
The recital will be at the South Broadway Christian Church, Denver
Second Prize: $250
Third Prize: $100

Jury:

The competition will be judged by a panel of five judges. The decision of the judges is final. The jury reserves the right not to award first prize.
